KTO: Behind the Laughter

Born out of necessity during a theatre festival at the University of Toronto -- seriously -- the improv troupe scheduled to perform failed to show up. So bravely and valiantly, new actors (and old friends) from various other participating shows came together in an act of sheer comedic genius: Kathleen Turner Overdrive was born.

Since their inception, KTO has been a mainstay in the University of Toronto theatre circuit, playing every opportunity handed to them, from headlining the likes of fundraisers to Frosh weeks; their ever-successful sketch comedy revues; and of course, back to their improv roots.

Sometimes scandalous, though always funny, KTO has nowhere to go but up. (No really, we're right down there at the bottom...)

Since 2007, KTO has had the luxury of playing to packed houses at previous monthly stand at the Brunswick House, leading up to their appearance and eventual NOW Magazine Audience Choice Award win at the Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival in 2007. From there KTO played the Best of the Fest Show on the Second City Mainstage (their first appearance there), which would lead-up to their participation in the 2008 Fresh Meat Showcase for the Tim Sims Encouragement Fund.

...Still wanna to meet the cast?

Ellen Bayley

A native of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, The World, The Universe, Infinity, Ellen is currently an Arts Management student at the University of Toronto Scarborough after narrowly escaping deportation from New York City 3 years prior. Before washing up in the UTSC registrars office, Ellen obtained a piece of paper from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (emphasis on the Musical, de-emphasis on the ‘and’) in NYC. In her journeys, she held positions at ABC Television, Slater/Brooksbank Casting and Clear Talent Group. Illegally, she held positions as a hostess, waitress and coat-check person. Ellen is pleased as punch to be a part of KTO and to work with such an amazing group of comedians. When she’s not trying to be funny, Ellen can be found Donning in Residence, listening to musicals, or popping bubble wrap.
Jamie-Lee Symister

One day, up in Heaven, One-Eyed Gamblin’ Jesus took a swig of Gatorade after a long hard game of tennis with Genghis Khan. The sip was so refreshing that Jesus wept like a soap opera actor, a single tear falling from his last good eye dropped from above down to the ghetto that is Scarborough. From that Holy splash a full grown, newly born Jamie-Lee Symister came forth and he was holding all the blue cheese!

His first order of business was attending the prestigious Univ. of Toronto where he sought to mend the world by studying Theatre & English. While studying Theatre he was able to rise to new challenges never before faced. As an actor he was inundated with roles that would set the stage on fire; as a talking bush in Hedges (2003), Caliban in The Tempest (2004), Dr. Ox in The Experiment of Doctor Ox (2006), and working as part of an ensemble for collaborative/international theatre for the Prague Toronto Manitoulin Theatre Project (PTMTP) in 2004 & 2006. Additionally, the curiousity known as Symister would learn to embrace a natural storytelling talent stemming from years of making up excuses for always being late since he ran on Nubian prince time. Through the written word he would dabble in Drama, writing The F-Word (2005) and Adult Toys (2007) for the U of T Drama Festival @ Hart House. However, fearing that his skewed view of theatre would bring about the end of the world rather than heal it, Symister decided to return to his roots in comedy to stop the genocide of masturbation that Tarantino and his ilk had brought onto the world by thinking anything they wrote was golden showers for the masses. In the end, Symister finally turned his back on the educational system opting instead to learn how to be a true bastard on the mean streets of Lord Seaton.

Also, Jamie-Lee loves everybody….except for you, ya, you reading this. You’re scum…Jamie-Lee’s kinda scum, you wanna hang out?

John Hollick
John is an old soul, trapped in the nubile bodice of a 13 year old boy. He has a spirit for performance, and even more so attention.  What started as an escapist hobby in the twlight of high school, has turned into a university degree and lifestyle. John's had the privledge of playing, directing, and writing a variety of roles in amazing productions, from "Barefoot in the Park", to "Alice in Wonderland" at the University of Toronto Scarborough, to "the Myths that Unite Us" in Prague, Czech Republic. John is among the founders of Kathleen Turner Overdrive, and the fool that named them. Though perhaps more than anything, John is honoured and humbled everyday by the opportunity to work with such an amazing and inspiring group of people, also knowns as friends -- nay, family. You're his density.
Jonathan Langdon
Jonathan is an okay dancer.
Josh Andrews
Josh is excited that you're reading about him.  He hopes he lives up to your wildest expectations.  When not emoting for the public at large, he enjoys emoting for smaller individual groups of the public.  Trained in the dark art of funny by the Comedia Professori at the mystic Humber School of Comedy, his fellow cast members and a very strict Haus-Frau he is now able to share his love of laughter with you, the audience.  When not tending to his Electric Moustache  Josh enjoys reading his favorite books '101 Reasons Why Having an Electric Moustache Makes You Awesome' and 'The Lemmings Did It Their Way.'  He also is considered an okay dancer, and is wonderful to have around in case the power goes out.  You know... due to the Electric Moustache.  Try something.  Laugh.  Outloud.  No?  Ok, that probably didn't work and if it did you are far too suggestible.  If it didn’t come on out to one of our shows and you’ll be left with no other option but to laugh.

*Josh would like it noted that while this was being written it was very late at night.  He would like to appologize if the above did not make any sense.

**Josh would like to apologize for misspelling apologize in the above apology.  Thank you.
Mark Toszegi

Mark was born on a balmy summers night some years ago.  Growing up, he won several school awards for aptitude including highest achievement in grade 4 Sex-Ed, most likely to raise a yak farm, and cleanest fingernails.  After a number of years and close to 1 million dollars at the University of Toronto (Scarborough) he decided to teach others how to clean and care for their fingernails.  Aside from shaping the mind of tomorrow’s youth, Mark enjoys acting, reading, and acting like he’s reading (note* Mark can’t actually read). He would like to thank family and friends, mostly family.  He’d like to, but no one will let him.  KTO remains the fire in his creative heart, but Rolaids usually controls it.
Olivia Coburn
Olivia was born and raised in Toronto with great aspirations of being anything but an actor. In high school, she auditioned for a male role as a female Italian stereotype because – why not? From the audition, came a role in the production and the acting bug, (Actorus bugitis). In an attempt to cure the bug, Olivia attended the University of Toronto, majoring in Biological Anthropology. After realizing that there is no cure, she tacked on Drama to her majors and performed in many stage productions at UofT and around Ontario, toured in Europe with the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, and performed with her sketch troupe, Kathleen Turner Overdrive. After UofT, she continued her education at the Second City Training Centre in the Conservatory program. Presently, Olivia is a writer / performer in KTO – winners of the NOW Audience Choice Award in the 2007 Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival. So, Olivia is in fact, a winner and would like to thank her amazingly supportive friends and family for letting the bug take over!
Tom Nittoly

Ever since he was a child, Tom has always enjoyed making people laugh. He grew up watching such comedic influences as Monty Python, Abbot and Costello and Peter Sellars and would often recite short skits for his friends and family, whether they wanted to hear them or not. Despite this foundation in comedy, it was not until grade 10 that Tom made the switch from "Music Kid" to "Drama Kid". While he still bears a great deal of respect and love for music, Tom feels more at home on a stage than behind a saxophone. He would like to thank his parents for their undying support and constant encouragement; his friends for coming out to show after show; his fellow group members for giving him an escape from "real life" and and everyone who supports the arts in any way, shape or form.
